Key Stage 1 Reading Schemes

Key Stage 1 Reading & Phonics

We view the development of children’s reading and writing skills as integral to their learning in all areas of the curriculum. We follow the ‘Song of Sounds’ scheme of learning, produced by Liz Webster and Sue Reed (Headteacher and Deputy Head at Aldingbourne Primary School) for Phonics, which is a highly interactive and engaging programme for teaching children systematic synthetic phonics. Stage 1 is taught in Reception followed by Stage 2 in Year One and Stage 3 in Year Two. Children in Key Stage 2 requiring Phonics intervention are also taught using this scheme.

We have a wide range of reading books the children can choose from, including books from the following schemes; Big Cat, Oxford Reading Tree and Bug Club. The children have the opportunity to read regularly in school, individually, in small groups and as whole classes and we strongly encourage children to read daily at home.
